TitleLithological Database for Northern Rohri Command Area, Sindh, Pakistan
DescriptionA database of about 163 bores with bore logs was compiled from sources provided by SID, SMO WAPDA, and from various previous field studies. These logs were scanned, geo referenced and compiled in a lithology database. The digitised logs along with locations and reference elevations were included in the database. The aim was to include information from as many bores as possible in order to have adequate spatial coverage of the North Rohri groundwater model.

Project TitleImproving groundwater management to enhance agriculture and farming livelihoods in Pakistan-LWR036
Project DetailsThe aim of this project is to build the capacity of researchers, farmers, farming communities and relevant government and non-government agencies to improve groundwater management in ways that enhance farming family livelihoods in Pakistan. Building capacity means building skills, knowledge and confidence, and the provision of tools and processes. Enhancing farming livelihoods includes ensuring long-term sustainability of agriculture and fairness of consideration across the socio-political spectrum. The specific project objectives are to: 1. Develop and articulate a shared understanding of sustainable groundwater use for agriculture and the need for improved management in Balochistan, Punjab and Sindh provinces. 2. Develop, with collaborating stakeholders in each case study, groundwater management tools and options that have the potential to enhance livelihoods of farming families. 3. Enhance capacity and institutional arrangements for post project adoption of tools and options developed in Objective 2 by collaborating stakeholder organisations.

Activity DescriptionCompile and review available information on groundwater systems in each province, including for modelling purposes Sub-activities: a. Conduct a review of climate, water levels, salinity, recharge levels and future trends, etc., that might be relevant to potential project sites b. Compile and collate data from above, and develop web-GIS portal c. Identify existing literature that might be relevant to potential project sites on the socio-political and institutional contexts (e.g. effects of gender, ethnicity and other political economic relations that determine the agrarian context) and other aspects relevant to how groundwater is used and shared (e.g. cultural norms, practices, informal markets, existing trades etc.)
